COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY
Axel Hütte's work is part of a tradition of German photographers who are direct heirs to the conceptual aesthetic and the teachings of Bernd and Hilla Becher, who, in the 1980s, readapted the original New Objectivity project to adopt a singular way of confronting the world. Like his fellow students at the Kunstakedemie in Düsseldorf - including Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Thomas Ruff and Thomas Struth - he shares similar concerns and conceptual approaches: a persistent practitioner of the large-format camera, he adopts a cold aesthetic, the most neutral and disaffected gaze possible, to end up creating flat, technically impeccable images with a quality of detail that reveals his formal concern for nudity and purity of register.
