Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a Scottish architect, designer and watercolourist who played a key role in the Arts and Crafts movement and was also the leading exponent of Art Nouveau in Scotland. A proto-modernist, he sought to reform by breaking with what had gone before. He rose to fame after exhibiting his furniture at the Vienna Secession in 1900 and formed part of The Four group of the Glasgow School, created in 1897, being its leading figure together with his wife Margaret Macdonald, her sister Frances Macdonald and her husband Herbert MacNair.
