Ettore Sottsass, born in Austria, stood out as an influential designer and architect. He lived much of his life in Milan because his father worked as an architect in that city. He began his education at the Turin Polytechnic and later became involved in the Italian army. There he was held in a concentration camp in Yugoslavia for most of World War II.

However, his greatest influence in the world of design came in the 1980s, when he co-founded the Memphis studio with other prominent designers such as Hans Hollein, Arata Isozaki and Michele De Lucchi, among others.
